Land Acknowledgement

The historic and ancient land of Buckhorn Springs is located on the ancestral homelands of the Takelma, Shasta, Klamath, and Modoc peoples, who used the area and its springs for healing.

The land on which Buckhorn Springs resides includes a rare CO₂ mineral spring. Although the ancient name of the spring has been lost, oral histories have preserved a general translation known as “Hyas Skookum.” This name comes from stories passed down through tribal generations and was documented by C. B. Watson. The CO₂ vapor was considered “the breath of the Great Spirit.” The four tribes shared an agreement that this land was sacred and dedicated solely to healing. This agreement was honored for thousands of years.

We honor and acknowledge the legacy of the Takelma, Shasta, Klamath, and Modoc peoples, who stewarded this land for countless generations before being displaced through colonization, treaties, and other acts of violence and dispossession.
